in first world countries, paper, glass, and metal are recycled pretty well (~80%/75%/50%). plastic is very hit or miss, between 10 and 30%. japan actually incinerates most of its plastic for power, so it's still a good idea to sort because that's probably better than landfill and it may become more economically viable to recycle in future (like if the price of plastic were to increase from decreased oil demand).it kind of is for people to feel better, but more so it's plastic producers making people feel like it's their personal responsibility when they realistically have next to no agency to actually make a difference compared to legislation - which is what they don't want you to think about.（01:10:49 - 02:29:10）
