"OK, is there something about this series that makes it so likeable or memeable?" A better answer would be that when Friendship is Magic came out, the show's writing impressed a lot of people who expected just another shallow "ponies doing cute things" aimed at little girls, but Lauren Faust-- who was responsible for Season 1 and 2's writing-- made it AMAZING. It ended up being a really cool adventure-type of series that followed our main character Twilight Sparkle learn about friendship and doing cool things with her friends.

You can probably tell by now that I used to be a part of the fandom when it kicked off back in 2011. I used to go to waiting rooms for the next new episode to chat along with other fans and browse equestriadaily (that website is still up btw) regularly... After that, it was Kemono Friends, and after that VTubers. It was a big part of internet culture back then so that's why a lot of people know about it and why you missed out since you said you weren't online much back then. Fauna was a fan of it back then, you guys could totally have fun watching it now.

Yes! Do a watchalong of at least the first two seasons! There's a character that's the embodiment of Chaos just like you are in Season 2's first episode! If you can handle more, watch Season 3 as well since the finale is a SIGNIFICANTLY HUGE moment for the series. The glory days of the series were 2011 - 2013 and that's when the fandom really popped off, but I think it's still alive and kicking even to this day. I personally stopped watching after Season 4 but it was always fun to watch.
